How to Drink: Whiskey Sour

In this episode I’m making a real classic drink: a Whiskey Sour. Sours are a class of drinks that combine spirit, sugar, egg white and citrus into a delicious frothy libation that’s been around since at least the late 1800’s, and is frankly a bit too easy to drink to be safe in my hands.

Whiskey Sour
2 oz. Whiskey
.75 oz. Lemon Juice
.5 oz. Simple Syrup
1 egg white
Bitters

While the Whiskey Sour is the most common and popular of sour drinks, traditionally a “sour” can be made with almost any spirit and I’d love to hear about your favorite sour or any potions you mix up after watching this one!

Hi! I’ve recently found your channel and I love it! The music, the slow motion, makes us feel in a Jay Gatsby party! I’m from Perú, have you tried a Pisco Sour? It’s our national cocktail, an adaptation of Whisky Sour but using Peruvian pisco instead of rye. Please give it a try!

Andres Perez says:

Nice touch of the biter.

Wolfatethecub says:

I don’t drink at all, but something about watching this guy make drinks is kind of satisfying.

Greg, thank you so much for all of the great content! Because of you all of my friends and family think I have a serious drinking problem with all of the liquor I have been buying lately!

I do have one question though, which I am almost positive you have answered in prior videos – Where do you get your drink ware? Would love to pick up a nick and nora glass and a few others from your prior videos.

Thanks again!

I just gave this a shot and came out with about a half glass full (using the measurements you suggested). How do you judge the amount of ice to add to each drink to make sure its not too diluted?

Derek Lee says:

How do you get a light under the glass? Is it a coaster? really curious…

Joseph Crawford says:

Hey man what’s the bitter you use for this? Thanks!

Firebirdfrenzy79 says:

Keep up the good work. I love that you focus on classic cocktails, that’s right up my alley as well! For something a little different, try making a Pisco Sour.

I love Whiskey Sours. No bars around me serve them the right way. They just throw whiskey, sour-mix and a lime wedge in a glass haha.

Joe King says:

do you think maybe you could do some research and find out when and why eggs were incorporated into alcoholic cocktails? I’ve seen you put eggs in many of your drinks and I’m very curious why

Whiskey & Kicks says:

I just made this my man, incredible drink! Great recipe….cheers! I’ll find you on IG and check out Whiskey & Kicks!!!

David Remus says:

Why were all the Whiskey sours I had in the past green?

Evan Karagiannis says:

a REAL Whiskey Sour…a recipe that dates back to my WWII grandmothers kitchen…the shit they made in the yesteryears of 1940’s/1950’s America…that’s made with a can of Frozen Minute Maid lemonaide, a pint of whiskey, and a blender.

Josiah Blycker says:

I decided to take an agave take on the sour and it ended up tasting spectacular!

Agave Sour
2 oz. Tequila
.75 oz. Orange Juice

not sure if you’re cheating or what. i’m watching the video in 480 and looks better than some 720p running around youtube right now.

Andrew Marinelly says:

I always got shit for drinking Whiskey Sours but when I was younger and mixed everything and drank till it was a battle to stand Whiskey Sours are a great time-out drink. They take a while to drink then to digest and are oddly refreshing and invigorating.

Timothy Duke says:

that’s a boston sour

Oh, ICK….. why the hell do you use an egg white? That doesn’t make sense to me.
