** What’s with the necklaces?

**A Whisk(e)y school?

Yup. Here are a few things we believe.

** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.

Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.

Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”

It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.

** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”

Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.

The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.

** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.

I have just been given a home ageing barrel (the 1 litter one). Would you suggest any whisky for me to put in it? I was going to put some Black Bottle in as its the cheapest thing around my area. It says to put some other spirit in the barrel 1st to chill it out slightly. I was thinking a white rum to see if that does anything interesting. I’ve been told to use vodka but I’m not normally a fan of doing what I’m told. Life’s too boring to not try new stuff.

Did you guys miss me? Been watching, just haven’t had anything to contribute lately. Just wanted to chime in on the whole coffee theory. I like bitter drinks, tea, stout beers, and coffee. But I do like them sweet. That being said as you guys know my first experience with an Islay was not pleasant, but as time passed I grew to appreciate it. Did so the other night actually, I broke out the Laphroaig (among others) and enjoyed a whisky journey. Long story short I think it’s a sound theory.

A spot of tea in Scotland means, well, it could mean something that isn’t tea. I can’t get this bottle in PA. So, the first time I ever had it was at Katie’s bar, Saturday night in Bridgend Islay. I thought it was pretty damn good for the price. Much more sweet than smoky. Here’s what we usually don’t think about in terms of the bottle packaging. The next night, another guy ordered it and the barmaid had absolutely no idea how much was left in the bottle. Did you know that on Islay you do NOT get extra whisky when you order the last dram in the bottle?? Scots can be so, emm, frugal. Keep them coming guys, 10,000 subscribers is in sight.

Tea is the best. I love whisk(e)y, but I love tea just as much. Sounds like the Savoy guy brought you guys some really good aged and fermented pu erh tea, which is like dropping someone into a super smokey funky islay “punch you in the neck with peat” whisky. Glad y’all enjoyed it though. Tea is one of the most affordable luxuries in the world, since even if the per pound cost is super high, that will get you an insane amount of brewed tea.

While talking with my grandpa last weekend about whiskey he asked if I knew why some whiskeys made him Light headed and others not. I didn’t know if there was a specific reason or not, can you think of anything? He doesn’t ever get drunk only 1 or 2 cocktails at most at a time.

I have up until now mostly tried and drank blended scotch whiskies(bourbon rarely, cause i am not really a fan).
I have only tried 1 single malt(and thats when i started learning more about whisky world) and that’s glenfiddich 12(liked it, but wasn’t that impressed).
Yesterday when i was with my friends i ordered laphroig(my logic was: i like rough flavors(bitter, sour, spicy and similar ), and i am not that into sweets) and i was blown away !
And yea i fucking love coffee, black, esspreso, cappuccino, all kinds except those sugar desserts that cant be even called coffee…
I was planning to go steady start with glenffidich, glenmorangie and so on, but now i think i might go the other way around and work my way down 😀

My first whisky was with ginger ale at 17 years old. Then I moved on to whisky and ice. At 35 years old (ish) I bought Bowmore and hated it. At 45 years old I started buying different blends. At 50 years old I bought a couple of different single malts but didn’t really know what all this stuff was about. At 60 years old I have bought many different single malts.
At 62 I am told that people try Laphrooiag and, at first taste, love it. I find that difficult to believe.
However on a holiday in the States we were given an icebox full of Doctor Pepper sodas. We hated the stuff. Do you know none of you yanks would take it off our hands for free. You all hated it too. So what I’m saying is … who can tell about peoples tastes in drinks.

8:30 – Count me as one of those newbies (ignoring the 15+ years of Jack D and Coke) who loves smokey whisky’s. I personally find peated whisky easier to drink as a ‘beginner’. I started drinking whisky neat with Glenfiddich 12 to help with a cold. A few days later I was out with friends trying different whisky and found Lagavulin 16 in a bar… WOW!

Black Bottle? It’s OK but I would rather spend £2 more and get a bottle of Glen Moray single malt from Tesco. That always seems to be £20 a bottle. If I want a blend I can get Famous Grouse for £18 a litre or less from Tesco.

Just started drinking Scotch a couple weeks ago. I thought it was weird until something you said today. So the first scotch I ordered was Laphroaig 10 year, and I was like this isn’t to bad. The next night is what took me from Scotch is alright to I only want to drink scotch, I ordered the Lagavulin 16 year and fell in love. I found your channel a few days later looking for whiskey reviews. I couldn’t figure out why most the reviews for the Islay scotch said not to drink it if you are starting on scotch, and then you made the Laphroaig comment in this video and said those people who love it must be black coffee drinkers. I’ve been drinking coffee since before I could drive and I am a big expresso fan, which sounds like its the reason I am a huge fan of the Islay scotch.

Forgive the wall of text. I just wanted to let you guys know the channel is awesome. I enjoy the history of the distilleries and the banter back and forth through the video.

The only question I have right now. I have seen quite a few things online about whisky starting to oxidize once open and the flavors change. Is there a general rule you try to use for how soon you should finish your whisky once it is opened or does it not really matter? ( I would also assume as all whisky is different, some would keep longer than others)

My first Laphroaig was the quarter cask, kept licking my lips for the rest of the evening. And yes I love my coffee.
On tea may I suggest you try a second flush Darjeeling single estate sometime. Look for 100% organic and the green-fly-fed variety. A single steep and your neighbors will smell the muscatel. Recommend Makaibari estate. A lot subtle on the flavour though compared aged teas.

What’s up Dan and Rex. First of all, Rex if you still have a problem with “expressions” of whisky, iteration is a less titillating word to use as well as variation and the other words you both used in a recent episode! Also you look like you just have boxers on in the beginning of this video. Recently started my whisky journey and I’ve since been able to try a good variation of speyside and highland whisky bottles. Dan, there is a liquor store in my home town where the owner HEAVILY pushes customers to purchase a bottling called Lismore. There are massive amounts of these bottles in stock. I’ve been a long time subscriber to several other whisky channels before yours and I’ve never ever seen this bottle or brand reviewed. The owner sells a 21 year old “legacy” bottle of Lismore for under $100 and he swears it’s the best speyside you can buy under $100. I just have to know, is this even a real brand? Or is the shop owner selling shady whisky and making a killing on it. Thanks guys, love the videos, as a teacher I’d love to some day pursue Somm things but for now I’ll just remain an armchair somm.

Alright, have you guys ever tried dun bheagan single malt scotch? If so, which whiskeys are like that, it’s a really nice smokey, and smooth. It’s also a pretty cheap bottle, I have been doing my research, recently found this channel, but will continue in the meantime.

1. I shared some Laphroaig 10 (among other scotches) with my buddy this week. He had never tried drinking whisky neat and he liked Laphroaig 10 better than Benromach 10, Talisker 10 and Bushmills Black Bush. So your take is spot on. Laphroaig 10 definitely has some nice sweet pear notes under all the smoke and iodine peat notes.

2. Black Bottle is ok, but I found it really sweet after awhile. And not smoky enough for my liking. Islay Mist 8 is just as inexpensive as BB and is made with Laphroaig.

3. I did a review of Black Bottle here. You know, if you want to promote a fellow enthusiast.

I tried Black Bottle and, frankly, I wasn’t impressed. I found the grain elements to be harsh. I had a drink of Glenfiddich 12 then followed it up with Black Bottle. The Glenfiddich made the Black Bottle taste much less harsh. I have no idea why. That taste has stayed with me. Glenfiddich then Black Bottle is fine. I suspect the Glenfiddich is training my brain in some way to accept the Black Bottle’s (for me) harsh overtones. Some bourbons have an acetone smell of nail polish to me and I think I get that with Black Bottle..

So, I have a bottle of double black, and I got a lot more iodine and medicinal peat than smoke. It also had a surprisingly short finish for a peaty whisky, so it would be interesting to compare with black bottle.

My first Scotch experience (Other than with coke when I was younger) was Laphroaig…and I loved it. I was in my early thirties so maybe that helped. Just received the 2017 Cairdeas and batch 009 10yo cask strength from the distillery. Looking forward to cracking them…the funny thing is, I’m not a fan of smokey food…

Do you know if women typically have better palates than men? My gf is crushing her whiskey journey and I’m wondering why I never took to it that fast. She was slow starting put now she picks out flavors right and left. It’s actually quite impressive. When I gave her Laphroaig for the first time she got through the peat smoke in about 5 mins and started getting sweetness and cereal notes that took me months to find when I first tried it. Pretty cool to see.

Me too I used to drink Johnnie walker, jack daniels, and jameson a lot and finally bought my first bottle earlier this year it was Laphroaig Select and absolutely love it!!! got balvenie double wood next but I don’t enjoy it at all. gonna get highland park, talisker and Dalmore next as you guys recommend. thanks a lot for the videos I’ve watched a ton of episodes (i know, what am I doing with my life???)

For my Budget Whiskey Decanter, I like Ardmore Legacy. I need to search and see if you have reviewed that one. It run’s around 30 bucks here in Kansas..

Me too!! I am still a scotch newb, and I must say that Laphroaig 10 has been my absolute favorite thus far. After I finished my first bottle, I bought an Ardbeg 10. I am actually sipping it now. I have to say, I think Laphroaig still takes #1. Lagavulin is next on my list.

as someone who just found your channel and have been going over you previous episodes. and as someone that had never tried whiskeys for that matter. i tried my first, off of one of your suggestions “Henry McKenna single barrel” . now im looking to try my first scotch and per your guy’s suggestions i went looking for a bottle of “Glenfeddic” or “Glenlivet” or “Glenlodic” (i think that’s how their spelled.) at my local “house of ill repute”(i.e. some where were the other costumers don’t want to even look you in the eye) (i live in SLC Utah they can’t even buy condoms and look the cashier in the eye here.) But none of those where available as some one just starting on the whisk[e]y journey what else could you recommend? thank you. I wonder if it’s the complexity and other flavors that help some newbies. I was a craft beer and wine guy for a long time and all spirits just smelled and tasted like moonshine and I avoided them. Cant remember why I did but I tried laphroiag 10 and it had all these interesting flavors that I didn’t even notice the alcohol, after that I was hooked
