Whiskey Vault Ep 144: Grangestone 21yr Single Malt Scotch Whisky Review and Tasting

Today we do a review and tasting of Grangestone 21yr Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

And a big THANK YOU to Harley T for creating this spreadsheet of the whiskeys we have reviewed so far:

BJ Patton says:

I recently started smoking cigars and have noticed I enjoy my scotch with a good cigar and my cigars aren’t as good without scotch.
Do you guys enjoy cigars?
What is your fave scotch to have with cigars if you do?

Richard n says:

YAY! First!

chuck430 says:

the hat of generous receiving. the mooch doesn’t give, only takes

limejuice says:

What the hell Rex, you didn’t mooch at least one more whisky? This can’t be good for your average score.

Mark Kilian says:

whaaat. that was awesome
thanks for sharing my joke.

Tom R says:

First! Boooo I see I am not first again. Time to drink.

Ruben Ojeda says:

DANIEL! REX! I was wondering if you guys wouldn’t mind seeing if you could get your hands on some Willett Family Estate Single Barrel Rye, or some Glen Scotia Double Cask Single Malt? The Glen because since finding you two gents online, taking your advice and tasting notes into consideration, I haven’t tried a whiskey or whisky that I didn’t like. The Willett, I have just been wondering about. I can’t seem to find it in the Austin area at Total Wine, Specs, Twins, or any other smaller corner stores or anything. Thanks guys, keep up the videos!

Rafael Ortega says:

Hey there gentlemen! do you have Dalwhinnie 15 on your list? that was the first whiskey i owned after the mooching days. it was a birthday present from my girlfriend, who bought it after being recommended by the liquor store owner. that’s the one that started it all for me. Cheers!

Raymond Mota says:

Hey Daniel. 2 peanuts were walking down the street and one was assaulted! Sorry about the dad joke Rex.

Kevin Pasley says:

Joke is on Rex, that was Brushwoods… “me time” sock.

Peter Schumacher says:

So, I definitely understand the on/off camera stuff. I (like many others here) have marathoned through these videos and as a result, feel like I’ve gotten to know you guys on some level, which is probably weird for you given that we’ve never met. So I worry about whether or not I’m “in” on the jokes.

Also, Daniel! This reminds me that I revised my whiskey tasting sheet a bit, and should send you the update. If you had any suggestions or edits, but didn’t want to bother with making the changes yourself, I’d be happy to do it on my end.

Harley T says:

So Highland Park have these 2 whiskeys, Fire Edition 15yr and Ice Edition 17yr. I’m going to ask since you have such a huge collection that if you happen to have these whiskeys in the vault, please do a tasting in honor of Game of Thrones! Of course if you’re not into it then don’t bother, but no harm in asking.

Also cheers for the shoutout to the spreadsheet, hopefully it helps some people in terms of a resource to look through.

Patrick O'Neill says:

Just started watching you channel. I love it! I really like how you guys will often pull in other whiskeys to compare. Keep up the good work gentlemen!

Daryl Shook says:

I lost Rex under all the hair.

Mark Kilian says:

I would like to make a toast.

In brightest day,
in blackest night,
no bottle shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship cheap whiskeys might,
Beware my power,
Green bottles light!!!!!

(totally didn’t rip off green lantern)

UnboundOdysseus says:

I know I joke around a lot but I have a serious question. When doing reviews, do you factor in when a bottle was opened? I’ve seen you guys open a bottle and taste it, but I find a whisky’s character changes after the bottle has been opened for 2-4 weeks (if it lasts that long). What is the ideal “breathing time” (bottle breathing time, that is) to get accurate tasting notes?

Cole Anderson says:

Hi guys, absolutely love the show, find myself laughing for the entirety of each episode. I was just wondering if you could give me a recommendation. I really enjoy lagavulin 16 and talisker 10, but I wanted to try another whisky that was a bit less smokey and for about the same price at my local liquor store there’s glenlivet 15, dalmore 12 and glenfiddich 15, all looked interesting to me and I wondered which you would recommend for a novice who likes Islay. Many thanks!

L Cants says:

Could you guys clarify something for me?

There are Malt Whiskys and Grain Whiskys (and quite a few others, but let’s stick to those two).
Malt Whiskys are made from malted barley, which in itself is a sort of grain.

Then why do we differentiate?
Wouldn’t it be easier to just call everything Grain Whisky and then have another subcategory called Malts/Barley, like you do with Rye, Corn, Wheat…?

Love the show by the way 🙂
All the best from Belgium.

greataxe3 says:

Haha! I was mentioned in a video! So this is what fame feels like! How do you guys not let it go to your heads? I’m also slightly embarrassed that that was my first comment on Reddit and I’ve been a member for three years.

And yes Rex, I do doubt your mooching prowess. Because (if I’m really honest) if you were a master level mooch, you would have mooched something other than an out of fashion clothing item that boils down to being a sweater for your foot.

Keep up the great work guys. Thanks for the videos.

Keith Albers says:

[Job interview] “Can you explain this gap in your résumé?” Me: “I fell asleep on the space key.”

Justanotherparatrooper says:

There is no way Rex can be out mooched. I mean look at the full sized keg belly hes has. thats a sure sign of too much mooching or as some will call it “the mooch keg!”

Raymond Mota says:

Haha great episode guys I should have a present heading your way soon. Keep up the great work.

UnboundOdysseus says:

Is that a bottle of Wiser’s Dissertation I spy in the background? I haven’t opened mine yet, but I’m getting antsy…..

Burley Mullins says:

I’ve been watching these videos out of order, just stumbled upon the Modern Rogue videos you were in (actually hadn’t watched any of their videos, so this was all pure happenstance) and was surprised to discover that i had managed to watch all of them. Thinking about getting a small barrel to age some mead in to celebrate. Cheers!

David Van Dusen says:

favorite old british navy toast, “to girlfriends and wives, may they never meet”

speed rakk says:

i want fire and brimstone . 80.00 i would rather a good bruichladdich or springbank.in colder weather ardbeg or cask strength laphroaig

Jorge Ripoli says:

jajaja i loved the new presentation….i think now Daniel may be a level 2 mooch after too many gifts, right?

Daniel Ovard says:

dear daniel and entry level mooch that is on this show. Where did all these subscribers come from? they have doubled in like the past week.

jayesh maurya says:

Hello Whiskey Vault! Its really nice to see a channel like this and educating people about their whiskey. It has completely changed my perspective in terms of understanding and drinking them. Even I have started to collect some whiskey. Thanks a lot, good show guys..!

charlie.g.hague says:

Some Lagavulin was spilt on the warehouse floor, as they were closing up for the night. And out of his hole, a wee brown mouse, crept into the pale moon light. He lapped up the whiskey from the warehouse floor, and there on his haunches he sat, and all night long you could hear the mouse roar, “BRING ON THE FUCKING CAT!!”

Saw of video of Nick Offerman telling this and it stuck with me. It’s a Guinness joke but I changed it to Lag. You could really insert any brand there tho.

Beeblebrox42 says:

In Dallas, it is on sale this week (week of July 10th 2017) take $5.00 off
the 12 yr is regularly 32.99
the 21 yr is regularly 82.99

Edoff says:

What was the name of that delicious port wine Daniel?

Belfry says:

Okay, so I’ve avoided asking about this because I don’t want to add to your long list of requests but I have a question I’m curious to see what you guys think about this whisky:
*Speyburn: Bradan Orach* Single-malt scotch
Is this a whisky you have ever had before? It was one of the first whiskys I bought, it was cheaper and I thought it was very pleasant with strong honey and green apple tastes much like the one you did today – and I thought it would make a lovely entry level whisky because of how friendly it was. When I looked for it again, ALL of the whiskey shops around have a spot for it but it’s all sold out, and has been for a month now and I can’t find it again.

When I started to look it up online, places like “Mastersofmalt” have a lot of 0.5 star out of 5 star reviews and people say a lot of bad things about how it tastes more like chemical cleaners and tequila than it does a whisky. This is as little discouraging as I thought I was beginning to develop my smell and tasting skills and although I found it uncomplex, I found it nice and easy to drink, especially since it’s a 20ish dollar scotch. I’d just like to know your opinion on it if you’ve ever had it.

Still It says:

And . . . .. . . weirdness got turned up to 11.

Enzo Fu P. says:

Hey, can you please dink in my name the next episode?

Love the channel!

Keagan Blanchette says:

This is a great channel that deserves more views. Have you ever tried Glen Breton?
